You heart sinks and breaks into a million pieces...
when you see your child’s face looking defeated, pained, about to give up on his or her dream college…
As parents, your biggest fear is that your child won’t be well-equipped enough to create a great life.
You want them build the best SKILLS that can help them get into the best colleges, or find the best jobs, or even create their own successful businesses, so they can build a fulfilling, prosperous, happy life!
But we live in a world that’s growing more complex by the day, and the education system they are in is severely outdated (despite many educators’ best efforts)!
Schools are FAILING to help your child build the skill set they need!
Even worse....college admission rates have been decreasing rapidly in the past few years, leading to ultra-low acceptance rates now, especially at top colleges
(For Example, from 2007 to 2019, acceptance rates of these college dropped from:
Cornell: 21.4% to 10.5%; Brown: 14.9% to 6.6%; NYU: 36.7% to 16%; Northwestern: 26.8% to 8.9%; UPenn: 20.5% to 7.4%; USC: 25.3% to 11%; Harvard: 9.8% to 4.5%; MIT: 12.5% to 6.6%)
And for most students, one of the biggest barriers blocking them from reaching their dreams is ESSAY WRITING!
Essay Writing is one of the hardest and most dreaded activities for high school students!
(I’ll explain WHY it’s SO HARD to get high marks for teenagers…)
I’m sure it’s painful for you to witness the FRUSTRATED, DISAPPOINTED, AGONIZED looks on your child’s face, because his creative mind has a lot of great ideas but doesn’t have strategies to ORGANIZE his ideas so his essay falls apart…
or it takes her hours and hours to finish a research paper, staying up until 3am, but STILL fail to get a great mark…
or his mind BLANKS FROM PANIC when he cannot finish a well-argued in-class essay in 45 minutes…
or she feels DAUNTED by open-ended prompts and have no idea how to even approach them…
or he feels terrified by poems or deeper stories that feel like UNSOLVABLE PUZZLES…
or she stares at a blank screen for hours in AGONY, because nobody taught her tips to jumpstart a 1500-word research essay…
or he STRUGGLES when his teachers tell him to “come up with stronger analysis” or “go DEEPER” because he doesn’t know HOW…
I have seen the same pain in hundreds of parents I’ve worked with…
I know your pain when you ask teachers at PTA how your child can improve his or her essays and writing skills, and they just tell you generic, useless comments like: “Read more”
I know how heartbreaking it feels when you KNOW she has the potential to go to her dream college, but she’s so DEFEATED she wants to give up her dream, worrying her marks aren’t high enough or her application essays are weak and can’t fully show her personality.
Why is Essay Writing so Important in Your Child’s School Life?
A lot of parents like YOU feel CONFUSED and LOST about WHY this is so hard?
_____
Even for kids who work hard and do well, it’s often the one subject that’s the hardest to get a high mark for.
This is the first reason…
Because in classes like Math and Science, even if it’s hard, there’s usually clear guidance and clear system that they can follow, so students know WHAT to practice.
But…with English class, unlike math and science classes where there are right or wrong answers, where it’s possible to get 100% as long as you followed all the rules and formulas….
99.9% of English teachers don’t have formulas and effective systems to teach your child.
Or their explanations of how to write an excellent essay are usually very generic…or non-existent!
So the path to getting top marks in English is enigmatic and abstract.
You CANNOT be a strong writer IF YOU ARE NOT A STRONG THINKER, if you have no SUBSTANCE.
Because being a STRONG THINKER is something you CANNOT FAKE.
It’s not something rote memorization or robotically practicing equations 100 times can fix.
…And most teachers do NOT have an effective SYSTEM with STEP BY STEP GUIDES and strategic techniques that successfully TRAINS THINKERS!
So students like your child usually feel like they’re fumbling in the dark…

That’s why of the countless students we’ve worked with...
even for academically strong students who ARE getting high marks in ALL other subjects, English class is often the HARDEST CLASS to get a HIGH MARK in, to improve or to break through, especial in SENIOR HIGH CLASSES!
...But you know marks for your child’s senior classes are the most important for college admissions!
(Now….For younger students, it’s actually easy to get decent marks in middle school English classes, because usually marks are based on presentations, discussions, creative writing…
NOT deep analytical thinking and structured arguments.
But don’t let it fool you… once students are in senior high classes where they suddenly need to write a lot of essays, many students start flailing.
SO MANY worried and confused parents have told us:
“My child used to always get over 90% in English in 8th or 9th grade, But is now struggling to keep up and barely getting a B and has totally lost confidence in himself.”
So it's critical for students to start preparing early... usually by 11th or 12th grade it's already too late!
If your child’s wants to get into the best colleges, and is on track to take AP English, AP Literature, AP Seminar, IB English or other Advanced English classes, the challenge becomes MUCH BIGGER
— Because those classes expect college-level papers!
They want to see your child’s ability to do academic research, formulate creative and complex arguments that are well-supported with evidence, and write college-level research papers that are thousands of words!
But….We’ve heard sooooo many students moan (I'm sure you are familiar with this):
“Our teachers at school DON’T TEACH us ANYTHING!”
This isn’t just a problem with the “poorly-funded public schools.”
Because more than half of our students go to the BEST, MOST EXPENSIVE private schools or prep schools …. and they moan about this problem too (if not more!)
This is NOT a problem having more school funding can solve!
(So if your child’s in a public school… don’t feel bad, those private school students suffer the same way.)
When you or your child asks school teachers for help, all they say is:
“You need to read more.”
(You child: “But it’s NOT gonna help me with my term paper due in a few weeks!”)
Or: “You just need to go deeper.”
(You child: “But… HOW?”)
Or: “You need to improve your analysis/structure/grammar/other generic broad problem….”
(You child: “Again… HOW?”)
Or: “You’re doing great!”
(Your child: “But… Why did you give me a B then? HOW do I improve enough to get an A?”)
I’m sure you’ve heard of comments like these?
Teachers at schools give super abstract, general and unhelpful comments!
And rarely (if ever) guide students using a step-by-step approach on HOW to improve
This leaves a lot of students confused and lost!
“Academically, my writing skills have improved significantly. I became a lot more confident in my writing and I’m able to express myself more eloquently.
You enabled me to receive marks that are way beyond my expectations. Moreover, I gained more appreciation of the English language in general and I am no longer afraid of essay writing/English classes like before.”
- Sally C. (Brown University)
“Truly, I believe there is no way of expressing the immense amount of gratitude I feel for you...
I know that without your help, I would not have felt like I had shown each and every university I applied to my true self in 150 words or less, and I would not be attending UPenn in the fall.”
- Angel W. (University of Pennsylvania, Wharton)
“I went from just writing down what’s in my head before coming to your class, to actually having a plan and knowing what each sentence should include….
There are things that schools don’t really teach you how to do, such as writing an outline.
Just like she (Rene) says: once you have a good outline down, half of your work is done.
In school it’s very different—they don’t teach you how to write a proper outline. They just say: ‘Oh, think of 3 ideas and just start writing.’
After the training here, when I finish my outline, I know what exactly will be in every one of my paragraphs. I know what the end product will look like before I even start writing. I find that extremely helpful with time management as well.”
- Jasmine Y. (Brown University)
When You Try to Help Your Child…It Gets WORSE!
As loving and supportive parents, you try your best to help your child find outside help, and your child may have tried tutors or after-school writing classes...
But then you discover that almost ALL WRITING CLASSES that are ONLINE or at EDUCATION CENTERS are for really WEAK students …or YOUNG KIDS …or new immigrants who are learning basic writing skills.
These are classes that just teach grammar...
or just read stories or novels and discuss them in unsystematic, random ways…
or teach very BASIC concepts of "essay writing"…
You've tried but just can't find writing program that help students like your child—
who wants to ACE English and become one of the STRONGEST CRITICAL THINKERS in class who needs to learn the BEST WRITING TECHNIQUES who needs to learn effective techniques for analyzing high level literature who needs to master the BEST ANALYTICAL STRATEGIES to help him or her get to the TOP with EASE!
Most of these classes just WASTE your child’s most VALUABLE YEARS for LEARNING…
And when you try PRIVATE TUTORS or SAT writing classes…
You realize that those teachers are not much better…
What they do is ask your child to write essays without giving useful guidance.
They critique the essay and give some comments--Which helps a little, BUT your child still doesn’t learn how to massively improve his own analytical or writing ability.
Simply critiquing your child’s essays is like putting on makeup to cover up acne, but the real, deeply-rooted problems underneath aren’t being fixed…
Because they FAIL to transform your child as a critical, analytical thinker with strong substance and do not SYSTEMATICALLY BUILD your child’s persuasive, effective writing skills…
You know this...
You child CANNOT get A's on high level papers or get into dream colleges without those skills.
“Thank you for giving me confidence as a writer—when I first attended your class, I was very skeptical because I had already studied under half a dozen other English tutors that did little to help me elevate my writing skills and my writing confidence...However, from the moment you read my essay and gave me the first piece of advice to improve my writing, you changed my life for the better.
Through teaching me how to become a better writer by pushing me to write dozens of essays, experiment with extremely complex sentences, and learn Latin roots, I not only became a better writer, but more importantly, I gained a new medium to express myself.
Thanks to your tireless efforts teaching me how to express my ideas more clearly and concisely, I became a better student and more importantly a better person.
Previously, I would sweat with apprehension when any of my teachers at school asked me to write an essay. Now, thanks to your guidance, I am able to confidently complete the task knowing I am fully able to express my ideas.”
- Angel W. (University of Pennsylvania)
“Your guidance has helped my writing and life immensely. Both my essays and my life were not as structured before you taught me your strategies… This class has certainly helped me in improving my vocabulary, sentence structure, and the complexity of my writing, resulting in my improved marks in school and provincial exams, but I feel an even greater fruit is how much my world view has changed…
It is because of this that I have always persuaded my mom to let me take your class.
I usually dislike having tutors since they are costly and inhibit my ability to self-learn, but I sincerely believe no other English tutor can come close to what you have taught me, let alone being able to improve my skills in other areas and reform my mind.”
- Dalong H. (Georgia Tech)
“Thank you so much for taking me as a student back in grade 9. Your classes were the most inspiring outside-of-school classes I’ve taken, and they’ve helped me all the way through high school. Even though AP Lit this year is a lot more work than my English courses in previous years, I’m still doing really good. Most of the tips that my teacher tells the class are echoes of the things you’ve already taught me.”
- Kathy F. (Princeton University)
The worst part is your child losing confidence and self-belief….
After trying and trying to improve with teachers who FAIL to help your child, You must feel so frustrated!
But what's even worse is that… you child starts losing his or her confidence!
And slowly stops believing in his or her ability or potential to be an effective communicator and writer…and even stops believing in his or her intelligence.
We've seen this in so many students. It's one of the most heartbreaking things to witness.
Secret:
Everyone’s frustrated, even the top 1% of students who are getting great marks
You’re not alone.
Your child is not alone.
Almost every single student we’ve worked with has experienced the same journey.
So I want you to know—the problem is not your child!
It’s NOT YOUR CHILD'S FAULT.
If your child isn’t getting his or her ideal mark in English class (whatever that mark is to him/her—A+, A, B, 86%, 90%, 95%....)
It’s NOT because he isn’t TALENTED enough, it’s NOT because she isn’t SMART enough.
It’s because he has never met a teacher or a program that could EFFECTIVELY HELP him/her…
In fact, I’ll tell you a secret that parents of students getting super high marks won't tell you:
Even many of the “best students” who are getting A’s or even over 90% have similar struggles as you child!
They are just better at “faking it”—but deep down, they are just as frustrated.
How do I know?
Because hundreds of our students went through a similar frustrating journey.
Almost ALL of them have tried tons of other options before they found us,.
They all went through similar frustrations, pain, disappointment… and we were able to help them.
And A LOT of the students we’ve worked with were actually getting A’s or even over 90% in English, or were in “Advanced English class” or “Gifted English class”, but were STILL STRUGGLING with essay writing before they found us… not to mention students who may not have high marks but are SMART and CREATIVE!
Almost ALL high school students feel the same frustration caused by the same problems!
They all share these same problem:
other writing classes are superficial and fail to help them…
Their teachers at school failed to help them…
including students in the BEST, most expensive, highly ranked private schools or prep schools.
Many of our students wasted years of their valuable time, wasted thousands of dollars of their parents’ money on useless classes or tutors that didn’t help them improve much….
I also know this pain because… I went through the same journey in high school.
You’d be surprised by this because…
My dad was a Fulbright Scholar with a Master’s Degree in English Literature and was a literature professor.
My mom was a best-selling writer who published dozens of books.
My parents taught me to read at two-and-half years old and by four-years-old I had a library of 400 books and did professional voice-over work by narrating children’s audiobooks.
So I grew up LOVING literature and writing.
I was in English Incentive classes and skipped a grade for English—and still got one of the top 3 highest marks in class.
I started creative writing in elementary school and in high school my writing started getting published.
My idea of “fun” on weekends was writing poetry and personal essays, or reading Victorian literature.
I loved Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, Sylvia Plath…
You would think I didn’t need help with literary analysis and essay writing…
BUT THAT COULDN’T BE MORE WRONG!
Essay writing was still a frustrating and PAINFUL experience!
Essay writing was HARD FOR ME!
“Before coming to this class, I had several private tutors. And this is actually the first time I was exposed to group learning, and I found that it was a very enriching experience. With the several private tutors I previously had, I did find that, even though it is probably a really concentrated teaching style, it limited my imagination for interpretations. The limitation is I didn’t have access to more perspectives as I did with this class.”
- Linda L. (USC)
“I’ve taken English classes elsewhere. They made me read books because a lot of people believe reading books will help you write--But after spending a year at that class I feel like it doesn’t really help you, because even though you read good sentence structures, but if you don’t have a good teacher teaching you how to use them or incorporate them into your essay it never really helps. They also made me memorize vocabulary, which doesn’t really help you either. Because just having deep vocabulary it doesn’t mean you know how to use them properly or they may not fit into your essay very well. They may write comments on my essays, but it just didn’t really help.
After your class taught me about writing essays, I know what I’m looking for in searching for specific ideas. I know how to sort them out directly. Also, before I usually didn’t organize my essay, but after learning the importance and after practicing planning out so many essays, I now know the best way to put them into three points or however many the essay needs, and can structure the essay into a good format.”
- Fred F. (Northwestern University: Material Engineering)
I had a Similar Journey…
As much as I loved literature, my analysis was based on random inspiration,
and I would sit in despair when I had no inspiration…
I had a lot of creative ideas, but struggled with effectively conveying them in organized, well-structured arguments…
When I had too many ideas, I paced in agony trying to find the best way to put them together…
It took me HOURS and HOURS to finish an academic essay…
It was not uncommon for me to write until 4am to finish a paper…
Exam essays or in-class essays were excruciating because I didn’t have a system and I had to wing it…
It felt like I was struggling in the dark,
like a blind person fumbling in the ocean in the middle of the night,
learning to swim by trying not to die….
“But this is how everyone learns,” I was told.
“Just read more and you’ll improve,” Another teacher said.
I knew I could improve more, and I wanted to improve FAST.
My parents were very supportive and we looked for help everywhere.
I was MOTIVATED to improve…. But I couldn’t find anyone who could ACTUALLY HELP me!
I tried tutors…. They didn’t help much.
They just critiqued my essays,
and most of it was just changing little things in my sentences or giving me different vocab…
I tried writing classes at Education Centers,… They didn’t help much.
And it felt like the teachers taught very basic concepts…
They seemed to focus on new immigrants who were just learning the language or really weak writers,…
I tried SAT writing classes… They didn’t help much.
It was very formulaic and focused on exam techniques or superficial comments…
I took private classes taught by a “retired professor”… He didn’t help much.
He was a very nice old man, but he gave us very generic, superficial guidance I had heard a hundred times:
“Use hooks in your intro paragraph…
Use at least 4 adverbs per paragraph,…
Make sure every paragraph has a topic sentence…
Use transition words like therefore, moreover, in addition… ”
Finally I realized…
“The Norm” is JUST NOT GOOD ENOUGH!
There HAS TO BE a FASTER, BETTER, NEW WAY for students to learn to analyze complex text and information, to think critically, to formulate strong arguments, to use the best supporting evidence, to create a robust outline, to write persuasive and effective essays!!!
I was living in an era where traveling by riding a donkey was THE NORM…
But I was looking longingly at the sky and wishing to fly in a PRIVATE JET—that’s how students should learn!
I knew we desperately need a NEW WAY of learning analytical thinking and academic writing!
So…I spent the next couple of decades developing a revolutionary system that was “NOT THE NORM” that transformed the way critical analysis and essay writing are taught—The Private Jet of Learning.
“I don’t like her class—I LOVE it! …Looking back through all my years, I feel like the system she created is really apparent. So each year I know what I come into and what I’ll get out of it. It progressively gets more difficult—and in a good way. It never becomes overbearing or overly simplistic to us. I think that really shows how much she put into creating this wonderful system.”
- Jaxon W. (Johns Hopkins University)
My Journey in Building this Private Jet of Learning…
Of course, building a Private Jet in an age where everyone was riding donkeys was challenging…
But I refused to settle for less than my vision— the vision of helping students who suffered the same way as I did.
The vision of giving your child the BEST POSSIBLE training.
I am a Systems Thinker and a Life Hacker who’s always looking for the most efficient and effective approach to everything.
I took the same approach in methodically developing this system.
Year after year over the decades, I tested countless materials, techniques, methods, strategies and methodically observed and tracked the effectiveness of each by tracking students’ responses and experiences to them, and tracking their results — how their analytical process transformed, how their logical reasoning skilled grew, how grades improved, how in-class essay marks increased…
And over the decades, I methodically filtered and trimmed everything down…
If something worked, but took way too much time…
If something worked, but the result was only mildly useful…
If something worked ONLY for students who enjoy writing but not for STEM-focused students…
If something worked for only a couple of learning types but not all learning times…
…I would GET RID of it or REFINE it.
After testing and refining this training system year after year, I developed the Masterclass Program that can help students BECOME the best master critical thinking analysis and essay writing.
For around two decades, I worked with hundreds of ambitious or aspirational high school students who desired to be better,… even become the best in their class! I helped them reach their dreams and their potential.
Some of them started out as weaker writers, some started out as stronger writers…
Many of them aimed to (and did) get into Ivy Leagues, but there were many who cared more about actually strengthening their skills than fixating on college ranking — but regardless of where they started, regardless of what their main goals were, they KNEW they had more potential and NEEDED the best system in the world to help them get A’s, A+’s, over 90%...etc in English classes!
Many of them never thought it was POSSIBLE FOR THEM to get an A or even over 90% in English!
But after our program, most of our students went into AP English, IB English, or other Advanced English classes.
And easily got over 90%, or at least A’s in these classes (in fact, many got 93%, 93%, even 100%!)
For our students who chose to be in regular English classes — Getting those marks was even easier, which gave them more extracurricular time to develop themselves and ENJOY their learning experience more. I’m sure you’d love that for your child too!

100% of our past students went to one of their top college choices around the world!

“Before 10th grade, which was before taking classes here, my English mark was around 81%-82%. The highest I ever got was 84% so it was really close to an A. And usually it was because my essays weren’t strong enough or they didn’t have well-supported evidence.
But in 11th grade after I started working with you, my English mark was around 93%, which was really high for me. I never thought I could actually achieve that!”
- Fred F. (Northwestern University: Material Engineering)
“The most direct way to show how I have improved is through marks. I improved by 20% from my grade 10 provincial exam to my grade 12 provincial exam, which was from 74% to 94%. And my IB mark (IB High Level English) also improved from a high 4 (~80%) in 9th grade to a high 6 (~95%) by 11th grade, and a 7 (~100%) by the end of 12th grade.”
- Linda L. (USC)
“…I also wanted to let you know that I managed to score a 7 in IB English HL (~100%) and I know I couldn't have achieved this mark without your guidance.”
- Stanley Y. (UBC Sauder Business School)
